1830-1930
€800 - €1.200

Collection of Kalighat paintings on paper, size: 136 x 88 mm. In good condition in a blue album (European style)

The V&A holds the largest collection of Kalighat paintings in the world. Created and collected over a period of 100 years from the 1830s to the 1930s, the works vary in style, quality of workmanship, colour, composition and subject matter. Characterised by bright colours and bold outlines, Kalighat painting evolved as a unique genre of Indian painting in 19th-century Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), in West Bengal. From the depiction of gods and other mythological characters, these paintings developed over time to reflect a variety of themes. Ref. V&A Museum website
