The De aanmerkenswaardigste... was a colossal Dutch account of the various voyages of discovery in the West and East Indies undertaken by all of the European nations, excepting the Dutch. It consists of 93 (of 127) parts, each with a special title-page, separate pagination and register. Including voyages by Acosta, Cavendish, Cortés, Coutinho, Da Cunha, Frobisher, Da Gama, Magallanes, De Soto, etc. Van der Aa, ever the consummate salesman, astutely attributed the work to Gottfried, whose Chronicle he had published a few years earlier. In reality Gottfried had nothing to do with the present work. The work was edited and co-published by Pieter van der Aa, known for his ambitious projects. In 1706 Van der Aa started publishing the translated voyages in both 8vo and folio instalments, and a year later he published a 28-volume set of the 8vo editions. In the octavo edition chapters were arranged chronologically. The folio editions were afterwards issued and divided in four large collections of two volume each. A projected collection of Dutch voyages never appeared. The voyage of the Dutch traveller J.J. de Roy to Borneo and Achin was probably printed before van der Aa decided to publish the series of Dutch travels separately. Ref.
