[Flanders (Grammont Abbey), near Cambrai
c. 1200]
€700 - €900

"Single large leaf, 450 x 310 mm. (written space 320 x 210 mm.) ; with double column of 41 lines of a fine and professional gothic bookhand, written above top line, rubrics, paragraph marks and running titles in red, nine 2-line initials in red or dark blue with contrasting penwork picking out simple acanthus foliage, slight darkening to edges, else excellent condition, with printed card description in German of this leaf (presumably that of Dr Walter Eichenberger)"

"This is a leaf from the celebrated Bible of Geraardsbergen/Grammont Abbey, whose four volumes were probably separated at the suppression of the abbey in 1796. Vols. I and IV are presumed destroyed. Vol. III was partly dispersed by the Swiss book and artdealer, Dr Walter Eichenberger, with the remnant sold by Sotheby's, 24 June 1986, lot 78 (now Schøyen Collection, MS. 6/1). Vol. II has a colophon naming Geraardsbergen (""Liber beati Adriani de Geraldi Monte""), and belonged to Franz Trau in Vienna in 1905 and later to C.H. St. John Hornby and Major J.R. Abbey, then the latter's sale, Sotheby's, 25 March 1975, lot 2943, and subsequently joining vol. III in the Schøyen Collection (MS.6/2). Single leaves from the volume partly dispersed by Eichenberger have recently appeared for sale in Sotheby's, 8 July 2014, lot 11, 19 June 2001, lot 6, and 1 December 1998, lot 9, and Christie's online sale 24 November-3 December 2015, lot 6. The text here is from II Peter 2:6-7."
