[ARCHIVES]

Lengthy inventory of a Brabant archive, arranging entries according to alphabetised subjects
[Belgium (Brabant)
17th c.]
€300 - €400

310 x 205 mm, 125 leaves (including 9 blank endleaves), manuscript on paper, in French and occasional Flemish, complete, with titles of subjects in large script at head of page and approximately 26 lines of detailed entries in a good and legible italic bookhand, reference numbers in column next to these entries in form of a letter plus a number referring to place of item in original archive, contents list added perhaps some decades later, small spots and stains, else good condition ; modern cream-coloured card binding

The site of the archive, or its owner, is not preserved here, but it is clear from its contents that it was in Brabant and that its owner was well connected to government. There are entries here for documents related to the abbeys of the region, including a survey of them from 1636 and several royal acts concerning Villers and others, for archbishops and bishops and their authority, to the city of Brussels, the region of Brabant, listing charter materials from the fourteenth century onwards, the "Conseil en Flandres" with material from the sixteenth century onwards, the "Conseil d'Etat" and "Conseil Privé", among numerous other topics. In fact, it is such a large archive that we might well suspect that this catalogue refers to the documents of the regional government of the Duchy of Brabant in either Brussels or Wallonia
