SENECA, Lucius Annaeus

Opera Philosophica. Epistolae, ed. Blasius Romerus
Treviso
Bernardus de Colonia
1478
€5.000 - €7.000

In-folio, [212 (of 214)] ff, printed in gothic type, 51-53 ll., capital spaces without guide-letters. (missing initial and final blank, some minor spotting, tear in top blank margin of d1). 19th century half calf binding (signed by Lebrun), marbled covers, spine with 5 raised band, marbled endleaves (slightly rubbed, joints splitting at head and tail). Very good copy with wide margins

Second edition of Seneca's major works, reprinted, complete with errors, from the Naples 1475 edition of Mathias Moravus. The second of only two editions signed by Bernard of Cologne (+1478), both reprinted from editions by Moravus of Naples, suggesting that Bernard may have been previously employed in Moravus' office. His ornate gothic type, hardly suitable for the humanist texts which he chose to print, later passed to Michael Manzolus at Treviso. The editor, Blasius Romerus, was a Cisercian monk from Poblet (Catalonia) who also wrote on music theory and was closely associated with Moravus. Ref. ISTC is00369000 ; Goff S-369 ; Polain 3481
