[LEAF FROM A MINIATURE PSALTER-HOURS]

Leaf from a Psalter-Hours, with a decorated initial, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum
[northern France
late 13th century]
€400 - €600

Single leaf, with text in 12 lines in two sizes of an early gothic bookhand, ornamented with hairline penstrokes, capitals in arching penstrokes and touched in red, red rubrics, one small initial in gold on blue and dark pink grounds with line-filler in same, one 2-line initial 'S' (opening ""Sancta maria piarum …"") in dark pink heightened with white circles, its compartments enclosing sprays of blue and orange foliage on gold grounds, the whole initial on blue grounds and with angular edged sprays of coloured and gold foliage extending from initial up entire outer margin, the edges trimmed affecting edges of border decoration, slight flaking in places, some small signs of offset from leaves once facing this in parent book, small rectangular mark at head (perhaps from a modern mount), overall good condition and on notably thin and fine vellum, 95 by 65mm

From a charming late 13th-century miniature Psalter-Hours, perhaps dispersed as early as 1970 (the present leaf reportedly acquired then in Paris by a previous owner). Other leaves have appeared in Quaritch, cat. 1270, Bookhands of the Middle Ages VI (2000), no. 33; Bloomsbury Auctions, 27 October 2011, lot 4; Pirages Rare Books, cat. 47 (1992), nos. 20 and 49; and in the collection of Roger Martin of Grimsby: his sale at Bloomsbury Auctions, 6 July 2021, lot 61 (part)
