Gallaeus or Galle (1627-1709), Dutch clergyman and philologist, brought together everything relevant to these famous pronouncements; it was his principal work. The sibyls were the prophetesses of Greco-Roman antiquity, whose utterances were in Greek hexameter verses, the authenticity of which was said to be assured by the presence of acrostics within.
