Correspondence (letters and notes, 1959-1965) A series of 13 handwritten letters and notes, partly on blue, partly on white paper, mostly addressed to Yann (1899-1975) and Paula de la Villeon. All the letters are signed by Edmund Blampied, sometimes together with his wife Marianne. Several letters contain original caricatures in ink or pencil, including: Letter dated 14/01/1959, written on both sides on blue paper, signed (17.8 x 22.8 cm). Letter dated 10/01/1965 to Yann and Paula, signed by Edmund and Marianne (20.2 x 29.2 cm). Letter dated 14/10/1964 with a caricature of a horseman with a top hat (""Mon Bidet""), signed (18 x 22.4 cm). Letter dated 16/12/1960 with a large added drawing of an older couple (drawing: 20.2 x 13.4 cm). Letter dated 05/09/1961 with caricatures of, among others, a dog, a goose with a hat, and a balding man whose ear is formed by a bird in an egg. In addition, several other letters with drawings of, among others, a young man with a brass instrument, a woman with something in her eye, dogs in profile, etc. This lot also contains a total of 17 loose original caricatures or humorous drawings (excluding small scribbles or marginal decorations in letters). They are mostly done in ink and sometimes on coloured paper. Description of some of the drawings: Half Past One - man with hat, detail in magenta (20.4 x 13.9 cm), Hurry Jo! - man with moustache looks at woman in heels (20.4 x 13.9 cm), ""That boy's going to be an architect"" - he loves describing circles - little boy urinating (20.4 x 13.9 cm), ""The cow that has her mother's eyes"" - surreal scene with cow, snail, men with hats, coffee pot (17.1 x 12.5 cm), variants on the above drawings, partly coloured, sometimes with inscriptions such as ""Tiens!"". Other drawings feature typical Blampied absurdities: Gentleman with 'Adam's Apple' in love with lady owning many shares in cider- with magenta-coloured details (20.3 x 13.6 cm), One sees them at night- You know!- Two old men with mutations in headgear (duck's head, woman's leg), Gentleman Carrying an Egg Cup - signed E.B. and dated 1963. Waiting for the Thaw (Black ink on blue paper, 13.6 x 17.7 cm), Collecting for the Trousers for Bress Monkeys Appeal (Black ink on blue paper, 13.6 x 1.7 cm). In addition, there are also 10 separate drawings with a much less caricatural character, including a self-portrait with photo reference, black ink and watercolour on paper (28 x 21.2 cm), Dancers in red chalk (red chalk on paper, 21.5 x 16.5 cm, signed lower right). Dancer for Paula de la Villeon (Chalk on paper, 23 x 17 cm, signed), Coast Road Jersey (illustration with a man and a horse and cart, signed in the lower right corner (15 x 12 cm, charcoal on paper), House with garden (14x 12.2 cm, signed), Dancing Man (""Greek dance"") (blue ink on paper, 13.2 x 17.5 cm, signed), edited cover page of a telephone directory Jersey 1960 (ink and watercolour on paper, 21.4 x 27.9 cm, signed), character heads and a horse in ballpoint pen, very refined and beautiful condition, signed by the artist and dated 30 October 1955 (1 page, 16.5 x 22.1 cm). The lot also includes 3 etchings of works by Blampied, 2 of which are numbered in a very limited edition (both of 25 copies), they are all 3 signed by Blampied. Also included in this lot are 9 written cards, mostly signed by Blampied (mostly in response to New Year's greetings), furthermore 3 unwritten cards, newspaper clippings and articles about the artist
This exceptional lot of 68 items contains an extensive collection of original documents by the British artist Edmund Blampied (1886-1966), from the Channel Island of Jersey. The collection includes personal and signed letters, original caricatures and drawings in ink, pencil, chalk and watercolour. Many of the pieces are addressed to Yann and Paula de la Villeon, with whom Blampied had a close personal relationship. The whole offers a rare insight into Blampied's creative process, humour and graphic style.
