[CHARTER OF WERNER DER TOBENDE concerning land bought from a convent in FREIBURG, BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG]

Large single document in German, on vellum
[Germany (Eschbach, a district of Freiburg in Baden-Württemberg)
dated December 1340]
€400 - €600

Large and almost square document, with text in 30 lines of a Germanic secretarial hand with numerous ornamental flourishes, turn-up at foot pierced for seal attachment (seal missing) and turn-up there now flattened out, reverse with contemporary and later endorsements (two in French, with one of these referencing ""Heidelburg 1862""), old water damage to lefthand side removing first few characters of every line, and similar damage to bottom of righthand side (but there without text loss), this partly repaired on reverse with tape, some folds, spots and stains, overall fair condition, 293 by 310mm

A description by the notable book and manuscript dealer, Bernard Rosenthal (1920-2017) accompanying this document (but misidentifying the ""Friburg"" here as that in Switzerland), shows that he acquired it from the stock of his uncle, Ludwig Rosenthal (1840-1928) in the 1970s, and with his belief that the pencilled stock number at its foot is his uncle's from around 1900. This document records the annual payments and terms through which Werner der Tobende (perhaps to be translated 'the raging') bought property from a religious community dedicated to ""sanct Wilnhelmes Ordens"" (i.e. the Williamites, or followers of William of Maleval, a thirteenth-century soldier who converted to being a hermit) in the vicinity of Eschbach. It is witnessed by Johan Snewli Eicker, mayor of Freiburg
