Cutting from a vast Bible manuscript (with parts of 2 Samuel 13:23-29 and 13:35-14:3), in Latin, on vellum
[Germany (perhaps central, vicinity of Wernigerode)
second half of the 12th century]
€600 - €800

Large rectangular cutting from a single leaf, with remains of two columns of 20 remaining lines in an angular Germanic Romanesque bookhand, without biting curves, red marginal numeral in large Roman numerals, simple red initials (one 4-lines in height: 'P' opening ""Porro Absalon fugiens ...""), still in situ on binding detached from a book of sixteenth or seventeenth century (title on paper label on spine: ""Leichen Predigten auf Quedlinburg"", and with paper endleaves and pastedowns of that period still present), so reverse mostly not visible , seventeenth-century additions from later owner (see below), some old folds and small amount of worm damage, else in solid and presentable condition, in total: 190 by 340mm

The later volume and its charming Romanesque manuscript binding was owned in 1640 by ""M.I.K.W"" (expanded beneath this to ""Mag[ister] Jacob Klingsporn, Wernigerodanus""), who must be the Jacob Klingspor (1601-1665), who served as priest of the Oberschule in Wernigerode from 1626 to 1632. It then passed to the Oberlandsgerichtsraths, Hecht, Halberstadt (their printed ex libris on front pastedown), and later de-accessioned
