Single large leaf with main text in double column of 30 lines, the whole encased within an extensive gloss in smaller script in main hand, simple red initials and paraph marks, contemporary folio no. 'cclxxxii', reverse with full list of chapter headings for entire text, other near-contemporary and Early Modern scribbles added to blank space there (including one of the seventeenth- or eighteenth-century in French and presumably describing the contents of the later volume the leaf was used as a limp vellum binding on), discoloured areas, large horizontal fold at centre, splits at edges, small holes, spots and stains, overall fair and legible condition, 382 by 250mm

Raymond of Penyafort (c. 1175-1275) was a Catalan Dominican friar, who became one of the fundamental authorities of Canon Law. He studied in Barcelona and Bologna, and taught in the latter from 1210 to 1222. On the request of Pope Gregory IX, he undertook the compilation of the Decretals, a collection of canonical edicts which formed part of the bedrock of Church Law until the opening of the twentieth century. He was canonised in 1601, and is the patron saint of lawyers
