Cologne
Jermias Schrey, Henricus Joh. Meyer
1688
€200 - €300

In-folio, [28], 856, [80], 79 pp, title printed in red and black. Large engraved title vignette, printed in two columns: GREEK and Latin. Edition by Friedrich Sylburg (1536-1596). Heavily age-toned, as usual, due to the quality of the paper. Contemporary calf binding, first hinge worn, lower end of spine damaged

Some scholars see in the chief writings of Clement, a Greek theologian who died ca. 215, the ""Exhortation"", ""The Tutor"", the ""Miscellanies"", a great trilogy representing a graduated initiation into the Christian life - belief, discipline, knowledge - three states corresponding to the three degrees of the neo-Platonic mysteries - purification, initiation, and vision. Clement's teaching is undoubtedly colored by Stoicism. (NewAdvent.org)
