EUTROPIUS

Historiæ Romanæ breviarium ... notis et emendationibus illustravit Anna Tanaquilli Fabri filia, in usum serenissimi Delphini
Paris
veuve Antoine Cellier
1683
€80 - €160

4to, [xiv], 183 pp. Engraved coat of arms of the Dauphin at the beginning of the dedication. This Eutropius edition of 1683 was published for the education of the Dauphin (in usum Delphini). 19th c. binding in half red leather (rubbed), corners bumped, heraldic bookplate Thomas Grenville, manuscript prov. Henry Fitzgerald. Under her father's tutelage, Mademoiselle Anne Le Fèvre, later known as MADAME DACIER, quickly learned Latin and Greek and demonstrated a precocious skill for the translation of the classics into French. Madame Dacier published new translations of Plautus, Aristophanes, and Terence and collaborated with her husband on several translations, notably new French versions of Plutarch and Marcus Aurelius. Like many 18th-century intellectual women, she faced sexism and criticism of her work during her lifetime.
