[ANTIFONARIUM]

Southern Netherlands (probably Bruges), c. 1475
€3.600 - €6.000

A single leaf, 495 x 340 mm, ten lines of text with musical notation on a 4-line red stave, rubrics in red, medieval folio number ('ix') in red on verso, small initials in red and blue with contrasting penwork, LARGE HISTORIATED INITIAL 'B' (Benedicta sit sancta trinitas...), initial 90 x 75 mm, in blue with white penwork on gold ground, enclosing a detailed miniature of the Trinity as three crowned and enthroned kings, holding orbs in their left hands and making the sign of benediction with their right, crowns and orbs touched with gold, with lavish border illumination on recto, including acanthus-leaf ornament with bezants, various types of flowers and fruits, in excellent condition, in gilt-edged glass frame

From the same manuscript as the previous lot, and thus perhaps from the Cistercian abbey of Ter Doest, Lissewege, near Bruges. The depiction of the Trinity as three identical figures, while common in France, was rare in the Low Countries during this period. See F. Boespflug, La Trinité dans l'art d'Occident (1400-1460), 2000
