FIRST EDITION. With their ship frozen in ice for almost a year in 1901-1903 the first German expedition of its kind had little opportunity to explore the coastline of Wilhelm II in the ship "Der Gauss". Instead Drygalski and his crew amassed a tremendous amount of scientific data, which was published over a period of twenty-six years. The English version was not published until 85 years later
