4to oblong, [6], 606, [38] pp. Lacking f. *1, *6 and A1. Engraved allegorical title page (small tear without loss). With 78 (of 79) views (some cut short). Map of Namur is not printed on p. 572. View of Sluis on p. 453 damaged, a better print was tipped in by the printer. Some copies have extra maps and plates outside collation, but this copy doesn't. These extra maps were not ready on time and had to be inserted later on. Bound in half calf, heavily used

The importance of Guicciardini's work as one of the major historical sources for the history of The Netherlands needs no further comment, nor the beauty of the work as illustrated book, reflecting the emerging self-confidence of the young republic at the beginning of its Golden Age.
