Extremely rare Leiden medical dissertation containing observations on intestinal pain, constipation and flatulence, with recommendations for relief and cure. Willem ten Rhijne (1647-1700) was resident physician at Deshima, the VOC (Dutch East India Company)'s trading station in Nagasaki Bay, Japan. In 1683 he published the first detailed description of acupuncture in the West. He also wrote a pioneering book on leprosy in Asia, and a treatise on tea. Ref.
