[LEAF FROM A FRENCH-RENAISSANCE BOOK OF HOURS ILLUMINATED BY NOËL BELLEMARE AND ASSISTANTS]

Single leaf from a Book of Hours, decorated with gold cordelieres in its margins, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum
[Northern France (Paris or Tours)
c. 1530]
€700 - €900

Single leaf, with text in single column of 20 lines of a fine lettre bâtarde, line-fillers in gold and coloured woody stems and decorated panels, one-line initials in gold or grey on red, blue, green or gold grounds, some grounds decorated with foliate sprays and collections of pearls, the whole text-block enclosed within a golden cordeliere-rope crossed or looped at top and midpoints with tassels, these shaded in pale green, outermost blank margins trimmed away (with some affect to edges of cordeliere there), small spots and stains, else excellent condition, each leaf approximately 150 by 75mm.; framed

From a refined French-Renaissance Book of Hours produced by the 'workshop of the 1520s Hours Masters', now identified as Noël Bellemare (fl. 1512-46) and his assistants. The presence of the knotted ropework borders in a number of Books of Hours produced by this group of artists has been taken as a reference to the Cordelieres, or Franciscan tertiaries, suggesting the production of these devotional books for royal women devoted to that Order
