[THE MARTYRDOM OF ST. URSULA AND THE 11.000 VIRGINS]

Single leaf with a full-page miniature, most probably from a Book of Hours, illuminated manuscript on vellum
[Low Countries (most probably Flanders)
c. 1470]
€1.000 - €1.400

Single leaf with an arch-topped miniature enclosing a depiction of the martyrdom of St. Ursula and the 11,000 virgins, with the fourth-century saint held in captivity by pagans after they arrived in Cologne, while her followers (one blindfolded in the foreground) are massacred (decapitated bodies in background), before ships (perhaps those the martyrs are supposed to have arrived in Cologne on) and a medieval city built into a lagoon, border of flowerheads and strawberries set on dull-gold grounds, some crackling and losses to borders, a small hole or two, leaf shrunk at base, overall fair condition, 85 by 60mm.; framed in card mount (and reverse not examined)

From the same parent manuscript as the previous lot
