APOLLONIUS of Perga

Conicorum libri octo, et Sereni Antissensi de sectione cylindri & coni libri II
Oxford
e theatro Sheldoniano
1710
€1.600 - €3.000

3 parts in 1 vol. in-folio (40,7 x 24,5 cm), (12), 250; (10), 171; (4), 88 pp. Numerous woodcut diagrams. With engraved frontispiece & engraved title-vignette. (front. and title browned and some stains), inside clean, but some quires are age-toned, due to the quality of the paper. Contemporary vellum binding with blind tooling, stains, first hinge torn, title in ink on spine

The present edition is the first complete edition of the eight books of Apollonius, containing the editio princeps of the first four books in the original Greek. The three following books were added in Latin translation from the Arabic, with a conjectural restoration of the lost eighth book. Four hundred copies were printed. The manuscript from which Halley made this edition is now in the Bodleian Library. Although other manuscripts, Greek and Arabic, have since turned up, Halley's edition has stood the test of time and is still highly regarded.
Ref. Schweiger I, 37 (""selten""); Hoffmann I, 203 (""gesucht u. im hoh. Preise""). Only 3 other copies found in auction results since 1985.
