Under her father's tutelage, Anne Le Fèvre, better known during her lifetime as MADAME DACIER, quickly learned Latin and Greek and demonstrated a precocious skill for the translation of the classics into French. Madame Dacier published new translations of Plautus, Aristophanes, and Terence and collaborated with her husband on several translations, notably new French versions of Plutarch and Marcus Aurelius. Like many 18th-century intellectual women, she faced sexism and criticism of her work during her lifetime.
