Antverpiae

4to, [16] -330- [21] pp. Engraved arms on title. With a double folding plate, 15 full-page and 10 smaller engravings. Some pale damp-staining and some brown stains at the end.

The grave of Childeric (+481) at Tournai is the richest of the Merovingian period. When Childeric's treasure was discovered, the bulk of Childeric's grave goods went to the Archduke who had the great good sense to order his physician Jean-Jacques Chifflet to document every piece thoroughly. Chifflet's meticulous study, complete with extremely detailed engravings of the artifacts, was first published in 1655. On the night of November 5-6, 1831, the treasure of Childeric was among 80 kg of treasure stolen from the Library in Paris and melted down for the gold. Ref. Peter Wells, Barbarians to Angels (2009)
