Engraved title with letterpress text, 34 DOUBLE-PAGE ENGRAVED CHARTS, 2 woodcut maps in text, and 3 ADDITIONAL double-page charts of the Caribbean from Lootsman's Zee-Atlas, woodcut (one engraved) text illustrations and diagrams, partial woodcut from another work pasted below colophon Extra-illustrated with 3 charts of the Caribbean which had previously appeared in Lootsman's Zee-Atlas of 1666 (Koeman IV, Jac 1, maps 23, 26, 27) and which his advertisement of 1679 makes clear were available separately; the first chart of the Western Atlantic (Nieu Nederlandt, Brazil, Soute Eylanden) ; the second chart of the Caribbean islands ; third chart of Middle America (West Indien: Mexico, Cuba, Florida ...) Condition: volvelles missing from two diagrams, some spotting and browning, two maps with small repair, title repaired at extreme corners, occasional light dampstain. Contemporary vellum, Mailly-Haucourt coat-of-arms [Olivier 2044, this version not illustrated] gilt on red morocco medallion mounted at centre of both sides (new endpapers, missing two ties, discreet spine repairs)
Provenance: Joseph-Augustin de Mailly, comte de Mailly, marquis d'Haucourt, baron de Saint-Amand (1708-1794). The comte de Mailly, rose through army ranks to become marshal of France in 1783 and was beheaded in the revolution. Translated from Flemish (De Lichtende Columne ofte Zee-Spiegel) into French by Paul Yvounet. The titles of the maps are in Dutch. Koeman does not record a 1669 edition, but it agrees with his description of the 1671 edition, including the almanac for 1670-77 and all catchwords, mis-signings and mis-paginations.
